The mass displacement of more than 100 000 refugees from Artsakh has gone largely unnoticed by the global community, unfortunately. But Roots for Peace project has been there and helping from the very start as the large majority of them found shelter in Armenia. As part of these supporting efforts, YMCA Georgia drew up a proposal to host a group of youth from Artsakh and provide a week of trauma healing, compassion and hope.
August 22 – 28, 2024 were the dates when 20 young people from different regions of Artsakh have come to Camp Orange as part of Roots’ efforts to aid them to find solace and rebuild their lives. Together with other youth from Georgia, the camp program offered a safe and welcoming environment where they could recover from the trauma of displacement, reconnect with their peers and learn new skills.
“Our goal is to provide these young people with a sense of belonging and hope,” said Mariam Mamulashvili, one of the young leaders of YMCA Georgia Camp Orange. “We want to help them heal, rebuild their confidence and prepare for a brighter future.”
The camp’s activities were designed to promote physical, emotional and social well-being. Youth participated in a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, swimming and sports programs that helped them to reconnect with nature and build resilience. They also had access to educational programs, including language classes and workshops on personal and group skills, with particular focus on camping.
In addition to the camp’s structured activities, the youth have the opportunity to simply relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. They were able to play games, socialize with their peers and explore the local culture and customs.
The impact of the camp on the Artsakh youth has been very positive and profound. Many have expressed gratitude for the support they have received and the sense of solidarity and compassion they have found.
It may have been just a week, but the friendships and impressions are surely going to last much longer. This is Roots, this is YMCA!
